SEPTEMBER 2026 · BASELINE EDITION

US Career Learning Value Index

A small, transparent starting point: what SkillRoute’s reviewed catalogue says about platform concentration, purchase models and the occupational benchmarks learners are shown.

This is an editorial sample, not a census of the online-learning market. An entry may be a course, certificate, track or collection. The baseline exists so future editions can show real changes instead of claiming a comprehensive market ranking.

CATALOGUE CONCENTRATION

One provider accounts for just over half of the current sample.

Coursera8
edX2
LinkedIn Learning2
DataCamp1
Pluralsight1
Udemy1

Coursera represents 8 of 15 reviewed entries. That reflects current SkillRoute coverage, not a market-share estimate or a quality verdict. The next edition should expand fixed-price, academic and lab-based alternatives before any platform-level value ranking is attempted.

US OCCUPATIONAL CONTEXT

Salary signals need a source, period and population.

Provider pages may use job-posting datasets and narrower definitions such as “entry level.” BLS occupation medians include workers across experience levels. SkillRoute keeps these measurements separate rather than blending them into a single salary promise.

BUYING MODEL

Time changes the real price of subscription learning.

What the listed price misses

A monthly subscription turns pace into cost. A six-month estimate is not the same as a six-month deadline, and a learner who pauses may pay more. Fixed-price products reduce that exposure but may offer less structured sequencing or feedback.

What we will measure next

The December edition will add verified US checkout prices, estimated completion cost at the provider’s stated pace, number of substantial projects and cost per portfolio-bearing project. Values will be published only when the definitions can be reproduced.

METHOD

How this baseline was assembled

  1. Count the active entries in SkillRoute’s reviewed catalogue as of September 5, 2026.
  2. Group them by provider without treating catalogue representation as market share.
  3. Use current BLS national occupation pages for pay and projection benchmarks.
  4. Record provider-supplied salary claims separately with their named source and period.
  5. Schedule a quarterly review; preserve limitations and material changes in each edition.
