What to check before applying

Collect a small sample of current vacancies for this role in your target US location. Separate required skills, preferred skills and experience requirements. This is an exercise you can perform, not a claim that we audited those vacancies for you.

  1. Choose a repeated task you can demonstrate instead of attempting every listed tool.
  2. Build an independent example with a README, source information and clear limitations.
  3. Explain one decision, an alternative you rejected and how you checked the result.
  4. Consider adjacent roles if vacancies consistently require experience you do not yet have.

For a mock interview, ask a reviewer to challenge your assumptions and explain your project without a prepared script. Improve the evidence as well as the presentation.

Can you explain what happened, not just name a security tool?

Start with networking, operating-system basics and a small investigation. Watching a lab walkthrough is useful preparation, but your portfolio should show how you interpreted evidence and where you remained uncertain. Only work on systems you own or have explicit permission to test.

An independent project brief

Build an isolated practice environment. Use synthetic authentication logs to investigate repeated failed logins followed by a successful one. Separate facts from hypotheses, consider a benign explanation and document the next evidence you would request.

  • A scope statement and confirmation that the environment is authorized.
  • A timestamped incident timeline built from synthetic logs.
  • A short triage report with evidence, uncertainty and proportionate recommendations.

Self-review: Could another analyst follow your timeline? Did you avoid treating every failed login as an attack? Does each recommendation follow from evidence?

This is a proposed practice exercise, not first-hand testing evidence or a hiring guarantee.

Build work you can show

Choose a practice brief, deliverables and a self-review checklist. These exercises complement a course; they are not proof of hiring readiness.
