How to become a cybersecurity analyst without a degree in the US

It is possible to enter security without a degree, but “entry level” rarely means “no technical evidence.” Build the operating-system, networking and investigation habits that make security work understandable before chasing a long list of credentials.

What “without a degree” actually changes

BLS describes a bachelor’s degree and related work experience as typical for information security analysts, while also noting that some workers enter with a high school diploma plus relevant training and certifications. That makes a no-degree route possible, not automatic.

Your first security job may come through help desk, network support, systems administration or a junior operations role. Those routes create evidence that you can troubleshoot calmly, work with permissions and logs, document incidents and understand how normal systems behave.

  • Learn networking well enough to explain DNS, ports, routing and common protocols
  • Use Linux and Windows from the command line
  • Read authentication, endpoint and network logs
  • Write an incident note another analyst can follow

Build a small defensive lab

A credible beginner lab does not need to imitate an enterprise. Use legal, isolated systems you control. Generate a small set of events, collect the logs, investigate one suspicious pattern and write what you observed, what you ruled out and what you would do next.

The written reasoning matters more than dramatic screenshots. Hiring teams need to see that you can avoid overclaiming, preserve evidence and communicate risk. Never probe systems you do not own or lack explicit permission to test.

  • System inventory and simple network diagram
  • Five normal events and five suspicious events with explanations
  • One detection rule or query, including false-positive limits
  • One-page incident report with timeline and containment recommendation

Choose training by the evidence it produces

The Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate is beginner-facing and covers Linux, Python, SQL, SIEM concepts, intrusion detection and portfolio activities. It can organize the foundation, but its certificate is not a substitute for hands-on troubleshooting or an employer-recognized certification when a job explicitly requires one.

Compare any program against the artifacts you still need. If you already know basic security concepts, a lab platform or certification-specific path may close the gap faster than repeating an introductory sequence.

A realistic application strategy

Target job descriptions that emphasize monitoring, triage, documentation, IAM support, vulnerability coordination or security operations. Translate adjacent experience: customer support can demonstrate incident communication; IT support can show endpoint and identity troubleshooting; audit work can show control evidence.

Apply with a short portfolio index instead of a folder of disconnected screenshots. For every project, state the question, environment, evidence, decision, limitation and next step.

  • SOC analyst or security operations trainee
  • IAM or access-management support
  • Vulnerability-management coordinator
  • IT support role with security responsibilities

Put salary claims in context

BLS reports a May 2025 national median of $129,180 for information security analysts, with a 10th-to-90th-percentile wage band of $75,090 to more than $199,850. It projects 21% employment growth from 2025 to 2035.

That median includes experienced analysts. Entry pay varies by location, sector, clearance requirements and previous IT experience. A training provider’s salary figure should always be labelled with its data source, date and job definition before it is compared with BLS.
